From the RUBIACEAE family, coffea Arabica is considered a native of Abyssinia though the Arabs consider it a native to South Arabia. According to a legend I read in B.Brouk’s “Plants Consumed by Man”, coffee was discovered in the ninth century by an Arab goat-herder who noticed that some of the goats, after eating the leaves of a particular shrub, became more energetic. The plant was a coffee shrub.
