The Safe Food Foundation is making a last minute plea for donations to support Steve Marsh. The Western Australian organic grain farmer goes to court on February 10 after he lost organic certification on part of his farm in 2010 following alleged GM contamination from a neighbouring canola property owned by Michael Baxter. Steve is seeking damages from loss of certification and wants a permanent injunction protecting his farm against contamination.
The Safe Food Foundation has rallied support from foodies such as Matt Preston, Kylie Kwong and Jerry Coleby-Williams to raise money for the court case. Steve is represented by Slater & Gordon and most expect the outcome of the case to have implications for the organic industry. The Australian Certified Organic Standard and the National Standard for Organic and Bio-dynamic Produce in Australia do not permit any level of GM presence in a certified product.
