According to the Australian Organic Market Report 2012 the number one reason for people to chose organic is to avoid pesticide and herbicide residues in food. For good reason too – a study by RMIT University shows adults who consumed a mostly certified organic diet for just one week reduced the amount of pesticide residues in their urine by 90 per cent.
Each year Australian Certified Organic randomly tests hundreds of certified organic products for chemical residues. In addition, Australian Certified Organic conducts unannounced audits and inspections of businesses. The samples are taken from markets, small shops and supermarkets.
In the most recent round of sampling, Australian Certified Organic tested products as diverse as nuts, miso, beans, oysters, garlic, spices, soba noodles, oats, sourdough breads, raspberry leaves, roasted coffee beans, lemons and kale.
