Searing heat over the last week…. accompanied by the bitter disappointment when herbicide spraying took place along the side of the road where 4 of us had already hand pulled the so called offending weed. On Tuesday, 3 locals phoned to tell me the ‘spraying taking place ‘ signs were in place. Properties, who are registered with Council’s chemical free register, were not informed. Now the very welcome rain has arrived, the residue from the herbicide used will be washed into our waterways.
Just in from the Mayor of Byron Shire.
Hi Donald. I have requested staff look at supporting local groups who wish for non chemical spraying to tackle weeds. They are preparing a report to come to our Feb meeting so as it gets closer I will follow up again to ensure what occurred does not again. Regards and thanks for your ongoing commitment to our environment. Simon

BYRON SHIRE: MANY COMMUNITIES, ONE FUTURE
Sadly, this workshop is in Melbourne but what we should aim to host similar in Byron Shire.
The Weed’s Network (TWN) is hosting a day-long workshop on chemical free weed management. Learn about proven approaches to weed management without chemical input. Gain insight into current public perceptions of the herbicide pollution issue. Also, participate in a roundtable discussion to share your opinions and ideas with other participants. Meals are provided. This includes a lunch which will be prepared from weeds harvested from the CERES garden. The event will be followed by the official launch of the Herbicide Reduction Strategy for Australia, and TWN’s Working with Weeds Guide.
