When I spent a year in hospital when a 13/14 year old I was too old to be in a children’s ward. The other patients were mainly elderly men and what they looked forward to most was when the meal trolleys were wheeled into the ward with the smell of home cooking pervading the entire ward. Ill men would sit up in their beds and prepare themselves to eat. Those days all food was prepared in the hospitals on-site kitchens and the quality of the served portions were of a very high standard. I knew that because I came from a home where food was prepared and cooked to that very same high standard.
It is so depressing to read and see and hear of the low market driven standards now in place in Australian Nursing homes where our elderly are waiting to die.
$6 a day for each patients food allowance?
In the 80s I made a speech in London, which I was applauded for, when I said one can judge the quality of our culture and democracy by the way our infirm, disabled, elderly and ill are cared for.
Shame Australia. When nursing homes are run by tax payer supporter profit motive, its a sure sign we are on a spiral downwards.
